How to play

Ultimate Auction Draft is a free 1v1 game you play in your browser. You and a rival get the same coins, then take turns bidding on characters one at a time. When every character is sold, the stronger team wins.

The goal

Every character has a rating out of 10. Your team's score is the sum of your characters' ratings, so the goal is simple: end the auction with the highest total. Spending every coin on one star and filling the rest of your team with cheap picks is a strategy. So is sharing out your coins evenly. The auction decides which one works.

Taking turns

A Standard match puts 10 characters up for auction, one after another, and each player fills a team of 5. The two players take turns opening the bidding: the opener has to bid at least 1 coin on the character in front of them.

After that the players answer each other. On your turn you either raise the bid, which hands the turn back to your rival, or pass, which ends the auction for that character: it goes to the highest bidder at their bid. A pass is final, so pass only when the price is no longer worth it to you.

You can never bid more coins than you have. If your rival bids more than you could ever answer, you are passed for automatically and the character is sold at once.

The clock

Each turn has 15 seconds. If you let it run out while opening, the minimum bid is placed for you; if you let it run out while answering a bid, you pass. Running out of time 3 turns in a row forfeits the match, so nobody can stall a game.

Running out of coins or slots

When one player can't afford even the minimum bid, there is nothing to bid against. The other player gets an offer instead: take the character for 1 coin, or decline and it goes to the broke player for free. You have 10 seconds to decide.

Once a player's team is full, every remaining character goes to the other player for free, and when both players are out of coins, characters go free to whoever has more empty slots. Both teams always end up complete.

Winning

When the last character is sold, the higher team score wins. If the scores are tied, the player with more coins left wins. If that is tied too, the match is a draw. A player who forfeits loses, whatever the scores.

Every match counts towards your rank in that universe, and after each match you can rate how strong the characters really are. Those ratings move each character's rating over time.
